Bend is home to many local heroes, celebrities and characters that give it that small town feel, but not many locals have their very own holiday. John Flannery, owner and operator of Green Energy Transportation and Tour was honored by community leaders who announced a “John Flannery Day” at a Wednesday afternoon Farmer’s Market in Drake Park. Bend locals appreciate Flannery for keeping the streets of downtown safe with his late-night bicycle-cab service.
Visitors will relish the opportunity to ride behind one of Flannery's bicycle-powered chariots during the daylight hours. A permanent smile will spread across your face as you are whisked through traffic and past buildings on a downtown "victory lap." Ride behind Flannery on his half-hour Riverside Run Tour that rolls past the shores of the Deschutes River, and he'll explain everything from the history of Mirror Pond to the eclectic yard art that residents have used to decorate their lawns all over Bend.
Flannery also offers an extended tour of the Old Mill District where he describes how the railway system transformed the town of Bend back in 1910. While the railway tracks near the Old Mill once served as symbol of economic vitality for the city, the shopping and recreational opportunities at the Old Mill today represent how history can repeat itself. As an example of this, Flannery will point out the homes on wheels (railway cars) near the Les Schwab Amphitheater that once housed mill workers. Today, they serve as dressing rooms for performing artists at the Les Schwab Amphitheater, like Beck, Jack Johnson and Sheryl Crow.
If you are visiting the Old Mill District during the holiday season, be sure to bring the kids along for a horse-drawn carriage ride. With a carriage decorated like Santa's sleigh, and horses adorned with ringing bells, a ride through the Old Mill singing your favorite holiday jingles is sure to put you in a festive spirit.
