See art, poetry, and video work by the fifth grade class at Seven Peaks School.
Service Learning is a critical component to broadening students
perspective, both locally and globally, which is why it is an integral component
to the International Baccalaureate Program. As students prepare for the Middle
Years IB Program at Seven Peaks School, they are engaged in ongoing service
learning projects that integrate with school curriculum.
The fifth grade class at Seven Peaks School has been working on a service
learning project for the past month. With an interest in organizations in Uganda
that benefit women and children, the class wanted to connect with the children
at New Hope Children's Center, an
orphanage just outside of Entebbe, Uganda.
As students began the process of learning about Uganda and writing to their
pen pals, they learned that New Hope had lost its access to safe drinking water. They quickly
turned their focus to the water crisis facing many impoverished countries and
decided to try and help New Hope get a well.
The class put together a video to bring awareness to the issue.
They submitted the video to the Loft which is featuring an on-going community
art exhibit called WE NEED, which is based on Maslow's Hierarchy
of Needs. The fifth grade project was accepted, and the project will be open
to the public for First Friday Art Walk on March 4th at the Loft
from 5:00-9:00, in the upstairs on the corner of Bond & Minnesota.
The students WATER poetry writing will be displayed as well.
The class video will play on a continuous loop. Students will have the
opportunity to read their poems throughout the evening. Donations will be
collected for New Hope.
