EXHIBIT RUNS UNTIL NOVEMBER 20, 2016

Discover the traditional art and culture of Japan at the Opening Japan exhibit featuring three centuries of woodblock prints. This rare exhibit from the A6 Studio & Gallery runs until November 20,2016 and admission is free.

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT: The closing, then opening, of Japan to the West had a profound effect on a popular art form: the woodblock print. This exhibit presents a view of Japanese prints before, during and after Japan’s opening to Europe and America, featuring rare antique woodblock prints from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

Painstakingly drawn, carved and inked by a team of talented artists, craftsmen, and printers, Japanese woodblock prints are renowned for their artistry. The exhibit includes master works by Hiroshige, Hasui and Yoshitoshi.

From the height of Japan’s decadent “floating world” to the transitional years of Japan’s opening, to the era of Westernized “new prints”, this exhibit offers a special view of Japanese art.

Special exhibit events in October include a pop-up salon, film screening and art talk with Mary Brodbeck, private exhibit tours, and a "Ukiyo-e: Japanese Pop Culture and the Floating World" lecture with Portland-based art historian Dr. Ann Wetherell.
