Deeply rooted in the community, First Lutheran Church of Bend opened its doors in 1916 and built its first church in 1917 with a budget of just over $1000. Today, the church is located on Shevlin Park Drive near the Northwest Crossing neighborhood, and holds its worship service every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Ministries and programs are available through the church for people of all ages, from children’s services, to youth groups for middle and high school students, to Bible studies and small groups for men and women. Social activities include a women’s hiking group that meets every two weeks and Mah Jongg, which is played at the church every Monday starting at 9:30 a.m. The church also provides a number of outreach services to the community, including Family Kitchen, with a mission to serve anyone who needs a nutritious meal in a safe and caring environment. Completely staffed by volunteers, Family Kitchen is open for dinner on the third Thursday of every month and served 60,000 meals last year alone.
