Appropriately named, China Hat campground is located near China Hat, a natural cone-shaped formation with an elevation of 6,573 feet. China Hat campground is shaded by soaring, old growth lodgepole and ponderosa pine trees and is situated in the heart of the East Fort Rock OHV (off highway vehicles) Trail System, approximately 28 miles northeast of LaPine and 40 miles southeast of Bend. The campground, which is very popular among hunters during deer season, has 13 designated sites and amenities include picnic tables and fire rings at each site, along with a vault toilet within the campground. There are also two adjoining sites that can accommodate small groups and large RVs. Reservations are not accepted at China Hat; camping is on a first come, first served basis and no water service is available. There is trail access from the campground to the East Fort Rock OHV Trail System, which winds around lava fields and other interesting natural formations. The trail system is open to any dirt bike, ATV’s 50 inches wide or less, but please note that these trails are also open for mountain bikes, horses, and hikers to enjoy, so be courteous and share the trails with all.
