Cottonwood Pit Campground (also called Cottonwood Campground) is a very rustic, primitive camp located near Rock Creek and the route of the Historic Summit Trail in the Ochoco National Forest. The small campground offers seven camp sites (although some resources report only three) on a first come, first served basis and is open year-round. Camping and trailer space varies by campsite, but each site has plenty of room for tent camping and a picnic table. There is not water and there is a single vault toilet serving the area. This free campground interspersed with aspen and surrounded by a mixed conifer forest, which provides shade during summer months. Just a short distance away is a former gravel pit now filled with water in which visitors enjoy a summer swim. The swimming hole is also occasionally stocked with trout. For those looking for a great mountain bike ride on old two-track roads in a remote, challenging setting, this may just be the place!
