If horse camping in Central Oregon is on your to do list, Mud Springs Horse Camp is a gorgeous developed site just waiting for you 26 miles east of Paulina. Mud Springs is located on the southeast flank of Wolf Mountain right outside Black Canyon Wilderness, a remote 13,400 acre wilderness, which makes long, scenic rides through pristine country very possible. Deer and elk are common year-round here, and the lucky wildlife watcher may also see bear, coyote, mountain lion, or possibly wolverine. Take care, because this is also rattlesnake territory, especially in stream bottoms. Mud Springs Horse Camp consists of six campsites and nine livestock corrals, making it ideal for people planning for packing trips or visiting with friends who may not actually want to camp but still need room for their stock. Wilderness regulations state that group sizes be 12 heartbeats or less on the trails at the same time, but the campground does not have size limitations. This beautiful site has easy access and is a free facility, but please note that there is a 14 day stay limit. Sites will accommodate tents and RVs but there are no hook-ups. Stock water and vault toilets serve the entire campground and a picnic table is provided at each site.
