Pine Mountain Campground is close to the summit of Pine Mountain, near Pine Mountain Observatory. That means you can enjoy a lot of hiking and biking opportunities along with your amazing views down into the desert. There is no water, but each site does have a picnic table and there is a vault toilet. The campground is free and does not take reservations and, due to its high elevation and Central Oregon’s winter conditions, it is can be inaccessible from late fall through early spring, depending on the snow year. The camping area sits in a forest of mature Ponderosa pines and is reached via a well-maintained dirt and gravel road, so you can plan either tent or RV camping; the maximum site spur length is 30 feet. One of the real treats about this campground is it proximity to Pine Mountain Observatory, where you can spot stars and other heavenly bodies through their powerful telescope. Friday and Saturday nights starting at 9pm the observatory is open to public viewing.
